Lines from The Princess Bride that Double as Comments on Freshman Composition Papers

by Jennifer Simonson

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

“At a time like this that’s all you can think to say?”

“Nonsense. You’re only saying that because no one ever has.”

“I don’t think I’m quite familiar with that phrase.”

“I would not say such things if I were you!”

“I do not suppose you could speed things up?”

“That is the sound of ultimate suffering.”

“Inconceivable!”

To add my own, and I'm not lying, I once very nearly wrote on the margin of a student's paper, “Stop that rhyming now, I mean it!”

The next time you're grading papers, I'll pay you 10 bucks if all of your comments are constrained to The Princess Bride movie lines. I'm serious.

Anyone have any favorite comments given or received on a paper?
